“Àsè” is a dynamic choral piece for SATB chorus accompanied by African percussion instruments. Composed by Isong Akpan in July 2021, it was initially crafted as the theme song for The Royal Fatherland Music International concert in Calabar, Nigeria. The piece celebrates the Efik concept of “Àsè,” which encompasses achievements and public praise, often through song, dance, and instrumentation. With its vibrant rhythms and engaging percussion elements, including rattles, drums, gongs, xylophones, and woodblocks, “Àsè” is versatile and fitting for both sacred and secular occasions throughout the year.
