"Incantation," commissioned and premiered by Àkójọpọ̀ for their 2023 African Art Music Commissioning Project, is a vibrant choral and chamber orchestra work featuring flute, Bb clarinet, four voices (soprano, alto, tenor, bass), two percussionists, two violins, viola, cello, double bass, and piano. Drawing inspiration from Yorùbá culture, where incantations are poetic expressions used to invoke miracles, the piece conveys positive messages and good wishes through its rich musical language. Incorporating key African music elements such as polyrhythms, drones, and traditional timbres, it also features rhythms adapted from traditional music of Guinea and Ghana. The composition employs a "call and response" style, hemiola, and elements of improvisation, blending these with influences from Mexican music to create a unique and engaging experience.
