"Olùṣọ́mi" for chorus (upper and lower voices) and chamber orchestra features a solo mezzo-soprano, drawing from the personal and cultural roots of composer Aderayo Odebiyi. Growing up in southwestern Nigeria, Odebiyi’s mother, a proud Yorùbá woman, instilled a deep connection to their heritage by insisting that the family recite The Lord’s Prayer in their native Yorùbá dialect. This practice, though challenging at first, became a cherished ritual, uniting the family in their spiritual and cultural identity. This formative experience provided a profound sense of belonging and cultural continuity, which deeply influenced the creation of "Olùṣọ́mi." The composition, developed during a pivotal phase at the Musical Society of Nigeria School of Music, incorporates the pentatonic scale, blending traditional elements with emotional expressiveness. The solo mezzo-soprano takes center stage, delivering a performance that embodies both the personal and cultural significance of the piece, enriching it with heartfelt and evocative depth.
